Model identification guide: Junior Lockdowns

he Junior Vacumatic is a smaller sized pen 14 mm wide, and 124 mm long, compared to the Top line series of 14 mm wide and 131 mm long (for Standard pens). The first Juniors were Golden Arrows and Vacuum Fillers but with the introduction of the Vacumatic in june 1933 it was marketed as a cheaper alternative of the Vacumatic line. While the Top line pens had "jewels" at each end of the pen in the colour of the body, the Bottom line had black jewels. While the Top line pens had coloured sections (the bottom part that holds the nib and ink-feed), the bottom line pens had black sections (from 1938). The Bottom line pens also only had two cap rings instead of three. Other than that, the quality and functionality were the same.

The 1933 Junior Vacumatics came in these colours:

• Black Opaque
• Red Opaque
• Grey Opaque
• Crystal, which was a black pen with a transparent body (back lit)

They had a 1-tone "PARKER VACUMATIC MADE IN USA" nib which at first did not have the Parker Arrow.

It was soon replaced with a 1-tone "USA PARKER" nib.

In august 1934 the opaque pens (save the black) were discontinued in favour of new transparent versions:

• Black Opaque
• Red Marble
• Grey Marble
• Crystal (back lit)

In 1935 the Crystal was replaced with a new transparent black with longitudal windows and the Black Opaque was discontinued. A Green Marble pen was introduced.

• Black Windowed (back lit)
• Green Marble
• Red Marble
• Grey Marble

Also in 1935 the 1-tone "PARKER USA" nib was fitted.

In 1936 the windowed black was replaced with a transparent black with inticate reticular lines. A brown pen with a web- or tile pattern was introduced. These pens also had black blind caps.

The 1936-1937 line-up:

• Black reticular (back lit)
• Golden web
• Green Marble
• Red Marble
• Grey Marble

n 1938 the Juniors were completely redesigned. All marble colours were discontinued and replaced by a new design referred to as the Shadow Wave, it was a pattern of wavy, broken, longitudinal lines set on a black (transparent) background. The BlackReticular and the Golden Web were discontinued although the feature with black blind caps survived into the Shadow Wave line.

• Black Shadow wave (back lit)
• Green Shadow wave
• Red Shadow wave
• Grey Shadow wave
• Brown Shadow wave

In 1939 the Juniors adopted a redesigned filling system. The Speedline filler. There are also an in-between model which has a pre 1939 cap with a 1939 body. These pieces are not interchangeable. In the Standard Lockdown Vacumatic section of this identification guide there's a comparison image of these pens.
